The basic elements will largely not be created nor destroyed – with the exception of radioactive decay. However, the ability to access resources that are fundamental to the chemical and material infrastructure of our society and economy can be greatly impacted and diminished through irresponsible use. The combustion of valuable fossil fuels, the dissipation of phosphorus, and the diffusion of rare earth elements will make the resource base of the future more difficult to access for future generations.
