The landscape of technologies in the chemical enterprise is not merely shaped by scientific and engineering solutions alone but rather in combination with the environment of regulation, policies, and laws that construct the social context in which they operate.
Policies and regulations can accelerate or retard sustainability solutions and they can protect or help displace entrenched unsustainable technologies.
The development of regulations and policy that will empower and enable green chemistry and green engineering to succeed in society will be necessary to remove the obstacles and inertia that keep the status quo in place.
